Overall Purpose

The invitational "The American Experience: A National Summit To Promote the Well-Being of Arab and Muslim Youth" brought together approximately 200 invited participants to share information, identify existing resources, address barriers, and generate a roadmap for community and Federal action. The Summit provided a forum to discuss trends in the behavioral health status of Arab and Muslim youth in the United States; identify strategies that support the strengths, resilience, and well-being of youths and their families; learn about promising models of community action and service delivery; and set priorities for next steps. The Summit provided numerous opportunities for open dialog, which raised awareness about Arab and Muslim youth and family issues, increased knowledge about existing community and Federal programs, and promoted the identification of resources, barriers, and opportunities for collaboration. Participants included leading experts on Arab and Muslim mental health and substance use issues—behavioral health providers, educators, researchers, faith-based leaders, youth, and family members—and representatives of national Arab and Muslim health organizations and other national behavioral health stakeholders.

Objectives
  • Promote the overall well-being of Arab and Muslim youth
  • Bring national attention to the special behavioral health issues of Arab and Muslim youths and their families
  • Help build bridges between Muslim and non-Muslim professional, faith, and ethnic communities
  • Present the Federal funding process and behavioral health care funding opportunities for faith-based and community organizations
  • Promote the inclusion and integration of Arab and Muslim refugee and immigrant youths and their families into all aspects of U.S. society
